A Fine Wine. Composed and arranged by Dave Rasmussen. A medium-groove, laid-back kind of chart that features some lush brass voicings. Opens with a rubato piano chorus with the rest of the rhythm section joining for the 2nd chorus. Winds have a flute soli leading into solos by muted trumpet and flute. Scored for a 5,5,5,4 configuration; all saxes double on flute or clarinet. A tricky half-note triplet figure sets up the final chord, everyone has to count. Easy-medium difficulty. Recording by, and courtesy of, the Altamonte Jazz Ensemble.
Fall Foliage, composed and arranged by Dave Rasmussen. Medium tempo chart begins with a bass/piano rhythmic figure that sets up a tenor/trumpet bop line of the melody. A decrescendo interlude introduces solos from both tenor and trumpet. The interlude reappears to introduce a five-part trumpet soli leading to a guitar solo. The chart concludes with the original theme and rhythmic line. Scored for 5,5,4,4 instrumentation; medium-difficult; doubles: Alto 1 (soprano).
Forever, composed and arranged by Dave Rasmussen. Written for a 5,5,5,4 configuration. A slow (t=56), soft ballad that features a very quiet brass section on this original melody. Solos for muted trumpet and flute lead into a Kentonish ensemble passage. The chart ends with a short trumpet/soprano duet with a series of very quiet ensemble chords. Chart requires excellent listening, balance and intonation. A disciplined challenge for all horns in playing softly and in tune. Recording by, and courtesy of, the Altamonte Jazz Ensemble.
Malaguena, arranged by Dave Rasmussen. A concert chart that is a great set closer. Multiple tempo and rhythm changes throughout. The chart starts with a fanfare intro, followed by the bass trombone setting the theme in a slow latin tempo. The tempo doubles leading to a three-way counterpoint of the theme, setting up a transition to swing for a trumpet solo. The chart slows to a ballad for the second theme featuring trombone and leading to a Kenton-style sax soli. A rubato guitar solo offers your guitarist a chance to stretch their flamenco chops. Clarinets and flutes state theme #3 which sets up a swinging, uptempo tenor solo. Rubato brass state theme #2 again going into a fast showcase finish in 3/4. Scored for 5,5,4,4 instrumentation; difficult; doubles - altos (flute), tenors (clarinet), bari (clarinet).
Pot 'O Gold. An up-tempo chart based on the chord changes to a popular ballad, the chart starts off with solos from trombone and tenor. A unison bop line for all horns follows leading into the theme as stated by the saxes. The tempo changes to half-time for the ensemble which introduces a short classical motive by the trumpets. A guitar solo follows in a medium groove, changing to double time in the middle. The ensemble finishes with the theme, a drum solo and a short alto/tenor line at the end. Medium-difficult; scored for a 5,5,4,4 configuration. St. Patty's Gig. Composed and arranged by Dave Rasmussen. Easy, mid-tempo medley based on the chord changes of three popular Irish songs. Solos feature trombone, tenor, clarinet (soprano). Originally written for a St. Patrick's Day celebration, this chart is a swinging way for your band to celebrate the holiday. Medium.
Stars and Stripes Forever. Arranged by Dave Rasmussen. Sousa's stirring march in a rousing, up-tempo big band romp. The chart starts with a jazz march drum intro, leading into the main theme with alternating brass and sax lines. Trumpets have some challenging bop unis counterpoint to the saxes unis statement of the theme. Solos by trumpet and tenor are followed by the famous trombone unis line. Instead of a decelerando, a single drum rim shot introduces the final theme in a half-time jazz march. A rubato ending with an extract from Grand Old Flag provides a subdued finish for this flag-waver. Arranged for a 5,5,5,4 configuration. Recording by, and courtesy of, the Altamonte Jazz Ensemble.
Sunnyside Right Side Up, composed and arranged by Dave Rasmussen. This medium-up tempo chart begins with a flute and brass intro. The theme is stated by the band with a bop counterpoint line from trumpet and soprano. Solos for piano and trumpet are followed by a slower tempo featuring a sax soli and trombone solo. The bass resets the original tempo leading back to the main theme. Bass trombone resets the slower tempo into the ending. Configuration = 5,5,4,4; medium-difficult; doubles: Alto 1 (soprano, flute), Alto 2 (flute).
Sunrise, composed by Ferde Grofe, arranged by Dave Rasmussen. Saxes introduce the original classical theme in 6/8 with muted trumpet figures. The classical motive is followed until the saxes and rhythm come in with a swing version of theme #2 in 4/4; some counterpoint among the sections leads to solos from guitar and soprano sax. A brass interlude without rhythm provides an interlude leading to the final classical theme in 6/8. Scored for a 5,5,4,4 configuration. Medium-difficult.
The Christmas Song. Arranged by Dave Rasmussen. This chart is a feature for flugelhorn, which states the holiday theme in the classical ballad mode. An ensemble interlude brightens the tempo in 6/8 leading to a jazz flugel solo with a brass interlude on the bridge. A fermatta takes us back to the ballad tempo for the flugel to restate the melody. A flugel cadenza leads to a soft finish with flugel on top of the trombones. Medium.
Woods Meeting. Composed and arranged by Dave Rasmussen. This is an up-tempo blues that features solis for trumpets, trombones and saxes. The sax soli is from a Phil Woods solo, while the trumpet soli is from a Tom Harrell solo. The trombone soli lead is doubled on bass. Plenty of blowing space for alto, tenor, trumpet, trombone and guitar. Medium-difficult. Arranged for a 5,5,5,4 configuration.
