Jazz listeners living in the Los Angeles area and musicians worldwide have long known that Carl Saunders is one of the great trumpet players around today, He is a first-call player for both lead and jazz chairs in Southern California. Jazz fans and musicians in New England, however, have not been so fortunate, except through Carl's recordings - until recently, when he appeared with the Jazz Factory Orchestra at the Portsmouth Music Hall in October, 2014.
Dave Rasmussen has led several jazz ensembles which have appeared at venues in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, primarily as outlets for his composition and arranging skills. However, he focused his occupation on information technology and business management throughout his career, while maintaining his musical interests as "stress relief" activities.
When Dave graduated from high school, he attended Denver University where he studied math as well as music at DU's Lamont Music School. When Carl graduated from high school, he attended Stan Kenton's music school where he played melophonium and trumpet. Over five decades have passsed since these two classmates were in bands together at Rancho High School in Las Vegas, NV. It had actually been 55 years since they last performed together. A natural resolution to this situation was for the two former classmates to reunite with Dave's big band for a concert at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH. Excerpts from that performance are included here.
